Pollution of marine environments by traditional plastics is a global problem and its direct effect on marine life, birds and mammals is a threat to our natural world.
Most plastics will not biodegrade in hundreds of years, and there is a mountain of non-degradable plastics floating in the Pacific Ocean known as the floating Plastic Waste Gyre. Some of this plastic breaks down into smaller plastic pills that fish and marine life feed on and these plastic particles stay in their systems — and we eventually eat the fish. There is a global need for marine biodegradable plastics.
Mirel will completely biodegrade in marine environments. Mirel biobased plastics meet the performance criteria of ASTM D7081 standard for marine degradable non-floating plastics. Along with consumer education, biobased polymers that provide marine degradability may help to reduce the amount of plastic waste in marine environments.
